How to Build Your Gondola Shelving Step-by-Step Guide

Everything you need to assemble a Shop Supplies gondola unit comes in the package, except for basic building tools like a mallet, level and so on.

Building a gondola unit is a two-person job, so gather one helper and your tools and let’s get going!

Steps

Step 1 - Build the supporting posts

Put together the starter bay (if you are building a run of gondola shelving) or your single gondola unit by starting with its skeleton. The base structure consists of a set of posts with legs. You’ll need to attach two base brackets, one on each side, for each post. The base brackets have prongs on one end that line up with slots on the posts. For a secure fit, you might need to lightly tap the brackets into place with a mallet.

Step 2 - Join them with a bottom and top rail

Insert a bottom and top rail between the first pair of posts, starting with the lower one. All rails have tabs that slide into the posts — use pliers to adjust them if they don’t easily fit.

Step 3 - Slide in the pegboard

While holding the two posts joint by the bottom rail, slide the pegboard pieces in from the top, starting with the smallest one. The posts have grooves that will secure the pegboard after sliding it all the way down. Make sure the paint side of the pegboard is facing out. If you are building a gondola run, putting a pegboard in the first bay will help stabilise the add-on sections. For double-sided gondolas, slide one pegboard down on each side.

Step 4 - Check the structure is level

It’s now time to make sure each section is flat with a level or string. The base brackets come with adjustable feet — use your hands or a crescent wrench to adjust the bottom screws until the unit is leveled.

Step 5 - Install the kick plate and base shelf

Now put the base shelf onto the base brackets. Place the base at a 45 degrees angle, line up with the notch on the posts and both base brackets and set it down. If you are building a gondola shelving run, check the bottom shelves are all level before the next step. You also want to install the kick plates before the base shelves, otherwise you’d need to lift all the shelves to slide the plate into place.

Step 6 - Add the shelves

It’s now time to install the shelves. Attach all the shelves brackets, taking care they are at the same height on each side and then fit the shelves in.

Is it the same assembly process for gondola shelving systems?

Tips for moving faster when assembling gondola shelving units for your store

Plan and measure beforehand

If you are building a single or double-sided gondola, decide where it will go and make room for it so that you can get straight to building it when you receive it.

For those who are putting together a whole new store layout, measure and mark the flooring to know where to build the gondola shelf based on your planogram. We also recommend laying the posts and bottom rails flat on the ground before continuing with the build to double-check your plans before starting.
